Chucky says…

Heyyy!

The fishing is good, the fellowship is great, the Missouri beckons your attention. Come out and enjoy the best Montana has to offer!

Still rockin’ at Headhunters into August. The water temps have not climbed into orbit and remain cool. The fishing is damn good…off the charts no, but very good. There are some fish that are uncatchable, and if you like that kind of challenges, we have your fishing. I like the fish that will eat the fly, and there are some of those around too. Lots of fish rising all day long, junk eaters unite. Not many high profile wing jobby’s drifting in the feeding lanes…just lots of dead and decomposing pieces of flies. Wings, abdomens, legs…I like legs.

David stalking the wiley trout...

David, above, says…”Get your ass out here and fish the world’s best trout stream, this year. You like to learn? This is the place. You think you are reeaally good? Well. the fish make the ultimate decision. Always.”

July 13

Eagle Rock Fire

This morning at 6 30 am. Really windy today, but hopefully calming. I know the fishermen would appreciate the respite as well.

Out with Joe and Paul Taylor…my longest clients. They have a high tolerance level for pain, clearly. But somehow we get through it.

Water level in the mid 10K range. Not bad, it will drop, maybe next week, maybe sooner…consult your Ouija board, or for a clearer vision contact Nostradamus.

Film Tour: Craig

Fly Fishing films in Craig Montana

Saturday Night in downtown Craig

Thanks to all who attended the Fly Fishing Film Tour Saturday night. If you missed it, make your plans for next year. We loved hosting it and enjoyed the fellowship of those who attended.

Thanks to Izaak’s for the porch, the Nathan’s Jumbo dogs, the PBR on tap, stiff cocktails served on the Costa  Surfboard Bar, and the cast of 1000’s inside and out. Great venue for outdoor fun on the Log Jam.

Ben Hardy of Headhunters Fly Shop

Ben and Andrew manned the Dog BBQ all night and served just over 1 million Nathan’s Jumbo Franks.. Complete with onion, relish, mustard, and ketchup all washed down with ICE COLD PBR. That was awesome!

Good morning to all and have a great week. The water should be coming down soon…how do I know this? I’m guessing really. I did see a fish caught on a dry today, in my boat. Buzzball of course. Size 12. Nice brownie. He was sipping and the whole bit. More later about the event, as it was really cool.

Soggy Saturday Morning

New Boat Smell Headhunters Fly Shop

New Boat Smell Kalispell Style

Matt Patterson from up north and his new Hyde, well new to him. Not his inagural voyage, but does any other water count? The Missouri qualifies for the holy water…my take, strictly.

Cool this morning, raining, sleeting…the Glit….combo of glue and shit. Will be great fishing. Come and out and enjoy the best day this week.

Fly Fishing on the Missouri River

Come out, good fishing, inclement weather

This week on the Missouri

Near the Headhunters doorstep in Craig, railcars leaving

Today the train will leave Craig Montana. Hooray! We look forward to taking pictures without the rail cars in the back ground. So relish in the removal of our worst eye sore since?

The wildlife will appreciate it too. They have had to meander around aimlessly to find the walk through to access the river. Everybody likes the turn around. The fish never minded, but the rest of us were unhappy.

Snowing today in downtown Craig. BNSF staff preparing for additional work

Will hopefully get a few shots of the engine rolling through this metropolis…Melanie from Izaak’s will probably get the scoop. Izaak’s is open nightly now through the season. Open at 4 pm during the week and at 11am for lunch Saturday and Sunday. Guide lunches available too. Call or stop in the night before for morning pick-up.

Road grinder machinery near Craig at the Dearborn.

Road construction all summer long here in the canyon. Right now they are working on the southbound lanes from near Stickney to Pelican Point. Then they will focus on the northbound until August, maybe October. Depends on who you talk to.

Also tore up the Rest Area at Mid Canon and are rebuilding as I write. I guess some new super structure with flushing toilets is on the way. Or so I am told.

Andrew and Sara taking out the staff boat.

Headhunters staff and Scumliner restored Pete’s original drift boat. From back in the day, the early 80’s…now in the staff stable here at Headhunters. Sara and Andrew took it out and got it all smelly…and caught some fish too.

Lone angler fishing on the Missouri. Love the solitude of the Mo. Lots of water and lots of fish. Come out and visit us, or not. Just remember…you cannot make up fishing days. Gotta go to know brother.

Headhunters on the river...snow or not, it's good!

Give us a shout today to book your summer trip. We promise it will not be snowing…maybe. Lots of guides out this week at Headhunters, even today there are several. This weekend will fish well and there are a set of folks smart enough to have booked a couple $300 guided trips. Smart.

Catch rates have been good and hatches some what consistent. Nymphing is good, streamer fishing can be real good. Yesterday was on fire. Small and flashy the theme. Skip’s Rainbow Trout Minnow and the Brown one too. Stop in and peruse our kick-ass streamer selection and fill up your Thermos with piping hot coffee.
