Big Holiday Weekend

Labor day weekend fun on the Missouri
Friday and the weather is made for the weekend. Warming today and tomorrow and going the other direction. Hopper fishing may return, let’s hope.
Purge the last of your summer demons with us, and the Missouri…what ails you.
Some lodging and guide availability at Headhunters, but not much. We will see you here…for sure on Sunday for the fly sale.
Headhunters open all weekend for flies, shuttles, new fly rods, waders…
Sunday Scenes

An ant is a good idea...
Frank love’s an ant. So do I. He asked me if there were ants in the water, I said yes. He asked if they eat ants on the shorelines? I said yes. He was surprised when I mentioned that our fish will eat them in the middle of the river too. He said, “Really!”
It must have worked, because the photo below is the result of Frank’s presentation. Good work friend. They eat Beetle’s too.

Rainbows love terrestrials...
Hump Day

No rail cars...
No more rail cars clogging up grip and grin shots. Just blue skies and smiles. Cheezy huh.
Cloud cover today for the first time in a millennium. The fish appreciated the scalding sun, as we did too. Threatening T-storms as I write, but nothing a good Simms rain jacket and a couple Budweiser’s cannot quell. Tomorrow: Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs 70 to 80. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Says the weather guessers. I predict great fishing with lots of fish over 20″. I’m not right every day either. But some days…

Fly Fish Chick is in town for a spell. She has completed the canoe race, and was not looking forward to rowing the boat for her mother and daughter. She did say she could cast a fly rod if needed. Check out her BLOG for her post race coverage…

Captain Scott Yetter specializes in Tarpon in the Lower Florida Keys
Tarpon Time has arrived. This is known a a trout site…but we love a taste of Saltwater Angling too. 6 moths is about the right amount…
…if you cannot sneak away for 6 months, try 6 days. It will do wonders for your attitude. Your soul too…

Ben Hardy of Headhuntes fame...hooked up with Capt. Yetter spring '07
Check out our good friend Captain Yetter in the Lower Keys this year. His web site is informative and has current fishing reports. Scott is an excellent teacher and a patient flats guide. SOL learned tons about saltwater fly fishing from Scott. He has been guiding in the Tarpon capital for about 10 years and is familiar with a big chunk of water from Key West to Marathon.
His ever growing cadre of return clients enjoy his humor, knowledge, and total commitment to flats fishing. As with most of the captains in Florida, he is well versed in Light Tackle fishing too.

Carp with the Unicorn Fish...his 1st Permit
Above is Mike Kuhnert with his 1st Permit in March 2009. He is pretty stoked. Capt Yetter showed Mike an outstanding time. He’ll be back. Shoot, he wants to move there.
Scott has all the gear you need. High quality rods like Sage, Loomis, WInston. Reels by Ross, Old Florida…and a ton of saltwater flies…bundles.
Pack your flip-flops, flats shirts, you newest Buff, and floppy hat. Get on a jet airplane and relax. Fish, drink a few Corona’s at the Tiki Bar, and rest. You deserve it. Really.

Even Squeeky can catch fish with Scott...
Get a hold of Scott and book your Spring Release Trip. It fishes well late into the summer…and less pressure than the high season. Call him for open dates and the best times for your fishing pleasure.

Cuda Carnahan, read on…

Dave "Cuda" Carnahan netting yet another Mo River Trout. photo Mark Raisler
New E-Zine hits the Inter Web and features long time Missouri River guide Dave Carnahan. One of the most easy going, witty, and tenured guides on the Missouri.
I’ve known Dave better than ten years. He has been a good friend and I have enjoyed his company greatly. SOL and Dave even roomed together while wintering in Packwood Washington working at White Pass Ski Area.
Check out this article in The Contemporary Sportsman and learn more about Dave and how he became a guide and began “Living the Dream”
Dale Spartas also has an article in this E-Zine about the Spring Creeks…worth a look. Dale published a nice piece about Craig Montana in The Montana Sporting Journal recently.
Hello Bighorn…No, not the river

Bighorn on the porch of Wolf Creek Lodge
Mark L. sent us this photo of Bighorn Sheep this morning. Mark and Madeline own Wolf Creek Lodge, one of the fisnest lodging options on the Mo, and enjoys the wildlife roaming the property. He also like to fish a little. Meaning as much as Madeline will let him. She must be pretty lenient, because he is here quite often. The both adore this place and has become their second home for well over 15 years.
Mark made his first trip here while fishing/vacationing the Bozeman area. His guide led him astray must have felt his tail water aura and drove up to the Mo. So began the love affair. It is not over by any stretch.

Insert "you here" in this wade fishing paradise.
Also taken this morning. A crisp feeling in the air. Cold, not terribly, a gentle reminder that spring is lurking. Will the trees begin to bud soon? A few have started.
I love this time of year. Fresh beginnings. Spring love? My love for fishing grows stronger yearly, seasonally, daily…remind you of yourself. A common incurable disease we as anglers must endure. Is there a cure? I think we both know the answer to that. Just fish more…ideal therapy.
This river is still wide open. A couple more months of slight pressure. Very slight. There is a cadre of local anglers who are have great success with midge cluster patterns. Just looked at the fly bins which were once full of said patterns…we’ll be ordering replacements this afternoon. They seem to have evaporated…right into hungry mouths.
There will be some guides out this weekend. The working kind. Some would say that last statement is an oxymoron. Room for discussion on many levels with the connotations of one of those words…the -moron part.
