Dog Days this Week

We are a couple strong weeks away from the Dog Days of Summer but the temperatures will remind us that August is coming.

Remember that July is our warmest month here in central Montana with August historically cooler. But it can be stale and stale. We may see this this week. Temps over 90F will get us out early and off early too. If you want to head out about 7pm for an evening session, then have at ‘er.

Lots of rain and hail last night killed off the Trico’s for Monday.

It kept the anglers away as well.

Quiet on the river yesterday. Not too may bugs either after the Weather Damage.

Squeeky’s Best Flies of the Week: Small 18 Elk Hair, the UV2. The best by far. The small Buzzball is second. A Rusty Spinner. A few of these floating by and fish live the PMD Spinner. Trico Spinner. Griffith’s Gnat. Renegade. Dominick’s Reneball. Sz. 20 black soft hackle. Sunken Trico’s. Sz. 18 X Caddis. Sz. 18 Tan Translucent Emerger. And that is about it.

Some throwing the Chubby with a dropper. Others starting to rock the Crawdad. Some on the hopper. Others rocking the ant. A good time for the ant. Lead with it and drop off a favorite 2 Bit Hooker, or one of your favorite micro Tungsten headed pattern.

If you want some sun protection stop into Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig for the best selection of sun products. Sunscreen by SunBum, headwear from Buff and SIMMS, sungloves, floppy hats, sunshirts from 12wt., Orvis, SIMMS, and Headhunters Logo Wear. We got what you need @ HH.

Open daily at 6am and open late til 9pm. See us for all the killer recent information from the fishiest staff in the canyon and beyond. We are ready to help in any way during your stay fishing Montana’s Missouri River.

Mark, just want to say it was nice greeting you in the shop the other night. The employees in the store have been very professional, from last minute setting up my full day drift with Mark Hodek ( a wonderful guide and cool dude); also may I share my sincere gratitude for the ABSOLUTELY PERFECT Shuttle service I used on many days I floated my own inflatable pontoon! I have a new Toyota Prius it will not lock up with key pod left inside car. EXTRA KUDO’S ARE TO BE GIVEN TO YOUR FRIENDLY AND COMPETENT STAFF who bent the rules allowing me to leave the keys in your store to pick up later in the day. The success of my Fly fishing trip to The Missouri River was made possible because of dedicated EXCELLENT STAFF!!! You bet I am a returning client/customer. Thank you all at Head Hunter’s Fly Shop. Respectfully, Dr.Vic Branker
