4240cfs and a stones throw from 40F water temperature.

More precipitation this week with moderate temperatures. A chance of snow showers in the forecast for the coming weekend and beyond. Don’t forget your foul weather gear wen heading out into the Montana springtime.

Flows looking good and midges are hatching occasionally. Not enough to get us to revved up, but that will hopefully come. Some movement in the dry fly bins in the last couple weeks as the floaty midge patterns are moving from the shop to your fly boxes.

Big Mike McCune Sustained Anchor Casting Clinic this weekend that is sold out! You will see them in the class below Craig on Friday and Saturday. Lots of spey casters out there daily too. We have become the Trout Spey Source of Montana. And rightfully so. By far the largest selection of fly lines, tips, leaders, rods, and reels in the state. Come on by or pick up the phone if you need help in any way with your spey game.

Hook yourself up with a Spring Guide Trip to work on that spey cast and catch a few trout along the way. Take it to the next level this year with Headhunters. We have the guides to facilitate your learning process.

Fishing is heating up. Can still be considered hit and miss as we hear many reports from the local angling community. I think the trout are in about 50% of your favorite runs. Your favorite winter type runs. And spring like runs too. Just not that kind of water that you toss your grasshopper into. Don’t disregard the slow stuff. Stay inside, forget about the outside sexy water, and fish it up.

Pink, BWO, sow, worm. Split or not. 5′-6′ plus or minus from bobber to split. Change often if you flies are not producing. That is all you need to know. Sort of.

Streamer anglers are smiling. Spring is a good time to toss the big fly. Read John’s post from yesterday to get in on this secret. On the Brink? Yep, I agree.

Get a new fly line on that streamer rod of yours. Think about the punishment you give that line as it slides through that tip top over and over and over as you cast and retrieve. Nothing better than a new streamer line. We have lots and lots of models in stock from RIO, Scientific Anglers, Airflo, Wulff, and OPST. 5 manufacturers to choose from totaling at least 15 models!  An impressive fly line wall at the shop will make you mind swim and your fly line float.

Remember: Headhunters is the only shop to offer a Fly Line Guarantee! We want you to have the best and fish great. If the fly line that you purchase does not fit the bill, just bring it back and we will make it right. Trade it, swap it, dump it, refund it. Whatever you desire is what we desire.

Discounted lodging available for the next month with Craig Trout Camp cabins starting at $125/nt. Guide Trips at $350. A full sale rack at Headhunters as we need to move some stuff off of the floor for the burgeoning 2017 soft goods offerings.

Headhunters has rental gear too. Need waders? Rods? Reels. Boots, Life jackets? Anchor? Oar? We got it for a small fee.

Fly Fishing Info? Free. Always. Free maps too.

Fly Shop open daily from 8am and at least til 6pm. Booking staff ready for all of our questions about summer fishing, lodging, add’l recreating, Blackfoot River trips, where to fly in, rental cars, and all of the rest too.

Izaak’s open daily ‘cept Mondays at 4pm for cocktails and dinner at 5-9pm. Food in WC @ the Oasis Thursday-Monday. Shotgun Annies, formerly the Frenchman, opening in June ’17. Cascade has a couple bars that fry up a good burger.

And that is your Hump Day update…

  • My friend, Glen, is on the road from Utah today for our 19th annual April Fool Missouri River midge festival. Think he told his boss he had typhoid or malaria this year. Some years better than others but there’s always a few heads. Started out with 4, but only 2 left now.
We made sick day excuses an art form. Our mutual friend, Walt, author of memorable quotes about most things, offered this thought about cutting work to fish. “If a man won’t call in sick to go fishing, he’s really just a slave with a hobby. And if he gets paid sick leave and doesn’t go, he’ll end up being that guy who goes with you to the steakhouse and orders the lite chicken plate. Some things are just plain wrong “.
