We’ve spent all spring putting together our new Just Add “Vise” kits together, and they’re ready to roll. If you’ve been in the shop recently, you’ve already seen them.

As you know, Headhunters doesn’t carry fly tying materials – despite the fact that there are some great tiers here. Don’t have the room and don’t want to stare at materials collecting dust on the walls (like a lot of shops). We do understand that you sometimes want to tie up some of the hottest patterns while here (or before you come) so we’ve put together some of our favorite and most requested patterns.

Each kit contains materials to tie at least 20 patterns – 50 in some cases – and a materials list on the back if you want to replace any materials in the future. Most of the materials are in factory packaging so you know exactly who produces it and what color it is. Hackles are the exception, as we had to break up necks, saddles and packages to get the right amount without making the kits too expensive.

All kits are based on retail pricing, so you’re not paying extra for the packaging or tying videos we’ve put together…

TYING VIDEO’S! Yes, tying video’s. Each package has a QR code to a very fast tying video on the package. These are not instructional videos, and assume that you know the basics of tying. You can use your smart phone to view the video right at your desk, or at camp if your trout bumming’ in Craig. Pretty slick. You can also go to YouTube and see al of our tying video’s with the supplied link.

So, for the regular retail price of the materials, you get a link to the tying video and all the materials we had to track down from a dozen manufacturers. We’ve done all the dirty work for you. You just have to sit down and tie them up.

We will be posting them weekly on the Headhunter, and here’s the first one, the “Kreelex Minnow”. The Kreelex is the latest, hottest streamer on the Missouri River. Fly guru Ben McNinch is in charge, so if you have any questions or comments, direct them towards Ben.

We’ve got a dozen patterns in stock right now, and more on the way. Call Headhunters to order you JAV Kreelex Minnow kit at 1-877-379-3597.

That damn sun has put those fish down. Tougher dry fly fishing the last couple days. But, if you find them they will feed. And feed well.

While we have been enjoying this hiatus from real spring, we would like som cloud cover and lower temps to get things rolling. The March Browns are all but done, but we may see some local action one more time. BWO’s? Maybe.

The hatch cycles are accelerated with the higher H2O temps and look for things to surprise you. Bugs I mean.

Flows may drop more with the lack of precip so be prepared for less water. The wade fishing is excellent!

The entire river is still fishing and we love that. Find a spot with fewer folks, the entire river, and find your fly fishing soul-ace.

Look for heads tucked into the bank or near some cool shallow structure points. Did you think about structures yesterday? Test on Monday.

Nymphing finds us in quicker water than we usually are this time of year. Find that sexy stuff and drip those beadhheads in. Hit ‘em all if that bobber hiccups!

See you here at the shop, post or pre-trip for anything you may need. Like a Diablo Paddlesports Kayak rental…

Caddis Fest and BBQ Cook-Off this Saturday.

Subsurface structures are what drive fishing success here on the Missouri.

Fish, trout, all fish love structure. They certainly hang near it.

Shelf lines can hold fish as there is a constant flow of bugs passing by their heads and a quick swim can get the torut into a safe zone.

Identify the primary, secondary, and tertiary shelf lines and then think about why fish would be on any of these sub-surface structure points.

Food is the common theme. Fish are only where the food is.

This is a short lesson and reminder that knowing and understanding the relationship between the two will help you catch more fish.

The fish hang out near the food man. If there are not bugs popping and you are not seeing rise forms in that secondary lane…then my suggestion is to fish better, where the food is…deeper, water.

Just a quick reminder this morning.

The fishing is fantastic folks. Plan your summer fishing trip today as the lodging and guiding decisions become easier as both parties book early.

And for the DIY wade fishermen? Have you looked at the flows? Perfect wade levels this summer. We’ll see you here on the Missouri or in the bar to chat about the days successes…
