Hangman Spey Video – Mike McCune

Here’s a valuable casting video Mike McCune and I recently shot. Valuable because it is the spey cast I see Mike executing more often than not when we are trout fishing. I have had a number of customers ask me about this cast (it can be seen on other video’s Mike and I have done) and I often refer to it as Mike’s “Pendulum” cast, but Mike refers to it as the “Hangman”. The Hangman possesses a couple of very important advantages over other casts that Mike covers in this video.

This cast is especially suited to the short and light heads we use with our trout spey rods here in Montana. Many of our customers strive to achieve Mike’s completely effortless style of Skagit casting, and this cast is part of that formula.

More video’s from Mike and I coming soon.

John, thanks for bringing Troutspey and Mike McCune to the Mo. The evolution would not have been and continue to be without your efforts.

Thanks for the kind words Herbie! We love having Whitney and Mike on the Missouri!

  • Hi John,

What model of Sage Trout Spey Rod is Mike casting in these videos. Also a big thanks for these videos as well. See you next week.

  • Sad news out of Twin Bridges last night. Wishing Winston a rapid recovery. They’ve faced adversity before and come back better. Would a Craiglandia fundraiser be in the mix? Worth pondering.
Great video (especially the overhead shots) by John and commentary by Mike today. He casts with no effort at all, doesn’t he? And speaking of video, the shot of Whitney’s tournament cast was awesome!! And not just the distance- did anyone notice the perfect loop all the way to the end? Amazing.
