Monday Morning Missouri River Fishing Report 9.14.20

Not too bad out there. On a scale of 1-10, it is a 6.5? Or a 7?

Yes room for improvement as we move through the month. And improving daily is our theme here in downtown Craig Montana fishing the Missouri River.

The rest of the month we will be seeing better catch rates on the entire river as the dam flood of anglers will filter out through the rest of the river.

More and more anglers and guides are reaching out to some other option in the am beyond Holter Dam. Row arounds are not as needed as fishing on the run, floating, drifting, has been strong.

Nymphs that are on your mind include the Two Bit Hooker, Little Green Machine, Darth Vader, Micro May, Quasimodo, Tung Jig Hare’s Ear, Tung Jig PT, Pill Popper, Weight Fly of all colors including Purple and Rainbow, Radiation Baetis, RS2, Cheeseman Emerger, Zebra, Frenchie, Magic Fly, Peep Show, Ju-Ju Baetis, Rainbow Warrior, Tungsten Czech, Grape Slushy…

Swing Flies include the Sparrow, Carey Special, Woolley Bugger, Clouser Minnow, Skiddish Smolt Brown, any of those killer black leeches HH has in the bins…

A new Soft Hackle and Swing Fly area in the fly bins is being created now. No longer will you have to search around for your fav Trout Spey Flies. Nope. All in one area for your shopping pleasure. Ask next time you are in the shop for this hot tip!

Not much for the pure dry fly angler out there right now. Some tiny BWO’s, some caddis, some Callibaetis. Not much for the Trico. But good news on the horizon. More bugs coming. In October we will see true BWO, October Caddis, and more of the fall sz 16 tan caddis. September is one of our leanest dry fly month, beyond the big hopper.

Weeds? With the hard frost a week ago the death of dying has begun. Will they go bye-bye; sooner than later? No, probably not. September and at least the front end of October will harbor those weeds and make the nymphing and swinging sometimes difficult. Btu find your weed free-is region and swing ’em up. Streamer anglers will be showing this next month as well to gang up on those big brown trout.

Bookings for both guide trips and lodging are strong for the two months ahead. Swingers are getting their names on the books with our top notch and unrivaled Trout Spey Guide Staff. World Class Guides like Whitney Gould, Mike McCune, John Arnold, and more are available for Swing Trips this fall. Get yourself on the phone with our crack booking staff to lock up your time period on the Mo.

Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service Open everyday but Christmas. Daily 7-5. Shuttles, guide trips, 39 lodging options, sale items, the Best Flies Under the Big Sky, friendly faces, free river maps…
