Trout Spey Camp Update & Report

Fishing today is the priority, so let’s get right to the spey report. The crew is starting to get out with the two-handers now, and we’ve been running a few guided spey trips as well. Fishing the swing is pretty good right now, and will be getting better every day for the next couple of weeks. We’ve been seeing the best action in two places. Faster water, and on the lower river. If you keep that in mind, you should catch a few fish. The toughest reports are definitely coming from the upper reaches, but if that’s your gig, go for it. When the weather changes later in the week, this will improve quickly.

Both streamers and soft hackles are producing. Starting with a soft hackle is smart, especially if bugs are hatching and fish are showing. We’re using everything from large Sparrows, Carey’s and the like (imitating October Caddis) to small Improved Olive Soft hackles (imitating Pseudos). Plenty of #14-16 caddis around as well, which is always good for swinging.

Our Brown Trout are on the move, heading towards their October spawning grounds. Flashy fall streamers are in play. Fish them on a light to medium tip in the fastest water you can find, and you should be rewarded. We love the Montana Intruder, Kreelex, Stinger Sculpin, and Lil’ Kim right now. Plenty of others will work.

TROUT SPEY CAMP UPDATE

Wow! Evidently Trout Spey is a thing, as we’ve had a tremendous response to our Trout Spey Camp on October 10-12. A big crowd of enthusiastic anglers will be there, as will all of our relevant manufacturers and guide staff.

I’ve heard a few possible attendees say they may show up at the last minute and just pay the tiny $50 registration fee upon arrival. That’s fine, and you know Headhunters won’t turn you away. But it would help us ready for this big event if you would sign up in advance. We have food to get ready and event T-Shirts to order. So help us out by signing up by the end of this week if you can! Late sign ups and show ups may not relieve the event T-shirt.

We’ve got some great prizes lined up through our manufacturer representatives, including a new Sage HD Troutspey, A complete Orvis/SA kit, Spey lines from RIO, SA and OPST. You’ll also be able to try some new gear from several manufacturers. Did you know OPST is releasing a new rod series?

We’re sending out an email this week to everyone registered that will have a questionnaire to fill out. We are trying to gather information regarding which clinics you are attending, and we really appreciate you filling this out ASAP, so check your email.
