Missouri River Fall Fishing

Autumn on the Missouri River.

Fall is our favorite time to fish the Mo’. Mornings often involve pounding the banks with bright streamers, and afternoons are spent hunting heads during our reliable baetis hatches. Brown trout are aggressive before the spawn, and the rivers Rainbows are looking to gorge before winter. The Missouri River stays warm through November, and you can expect great fishing nearly to Christmas.

Blackfoot River fly fishing

Fall Fishing on the Blackfoot River.

Our favorite local freestone experiences some great fishing before winter settles in. Water temperatures cool quickly at these higher elevations, and the Cutthroat trout gorge on mayflies, caddis and terrestrials. Streamer fishing is also productive, and the crowds of summer have vacated, leaving the river quiet except for a few fly fisherman (and women!). We highly recommend this trip.

Mark and I hit the river at Pelican the other afternoon and both Pseudocleon (Pseudo’s) and Caddis were present in a big way. Fish were up all over the river eating both bugs. Mid-September is when both of these hatches...

Want to see what the late summer fly fishing is like on the Missouri River? Mark, Braden and John hit the Trico spinner fall on the Missouri River. This is one of our favorite hatches to fish, and it’s as strong as it’s been in many years.
