Mid-Week Fishing Report Montana’s Missouri River
Spring in Montana here on the banks of the Missouri River. Sunshine and rain and a split of snow. That has been the daily forecast for the previous week. The next week ahead we see weather patterns that bring some warmer temperatures and lower wind values.
BWO’s and midge happening daily. Fish rising some of the days in the high and bright skies. Again, the common conception that BWO’s hatch better under cloudy skies is false. BWO’s hatch, all mayflies, hatch better when they get of the water in sunny and breezy conditions. They stay, on the water longer to dry their wings in moist and cloudy and cool conditions. 1.5 seconds is the time that it takes wings to dry in the sun. 15 minutes can be the time if the sun is obscured, moist damp humidity, and lack of wind. Then then stay on the water until the wings have dried and are able to take flight.
So, good hatches in the sunshine. Short period of the insect on the stuck to the water when we have sunny and breezy conditions. Lots of bugs hatching, very few stuck to the surface, trapped, waiting for the drying period.
Midges going bonkers too.

Streamer anglers doing well. Shallow and deep. Intermediate tips along with dry lines are being tossed out there daily. Some days flahsy, some days White, other days dark patterns are producing. Streamer anglers are not afraid to change up the pattern or color. Those who do, who keep trying different pattens and profiles and colors, are the winning party.
Swingers. The Trout Spey gang loving the spring. They love the overcast skies too. All anglers this period appreciate the slate colored landscapes. Scandinavian Style ones provide the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful elegant casts with light soft hackles, BWO, and small leech patterns.
