Weekend Update from Headhunters FLy Shop in Craig on the banks of the Missouri River

Updating the current state of affairs fishing Montana’s Missouri River here in downtown Craig.

Dry fly anglers found them on the cloudy days this past week with more fish rising than we have seen since the early Trico session or the PMD period of June and July. By far the best bite too. The fish were taking and aggressive in pursuit on the streamer too.Nymphers having a bit of a tough time with below average totals to the boat.

The dry fly preferences of our trout include BWO cripples, duns, and emergers. Of course the nymphers are all over the subsurface patterns as well like Two Bit Hookers, Little Green Machine, Frenchie’s, BH Olive Perdition, Bubble Up Olive May, Crystal Dip Bead Olive, Higa’s SOS Olive, Hogan’s Military May Olive, RS2, and more. Streamer fans liking the leech game.Swingers too.

Most anglers still upriver with Dam and Wolf Creek being very popular for the nymph gang. The entire river is certainly fishing with floats to Cascade happening daily.

Water flows as low as I, this author, have ever seen them. Currently 2600cfs. Federally mandated, suggested, low flow of 2800cfs. Water temps plunging as this last week saw temps at freezing or below. Fell 4 degrees this last week. Hooray! Fall is here in central Montana.

Guide trips out daily. Have some openings this coming two weeks. Most trout fishing operations in the state including many here locally winding down for the season. Not Headhunters of Craig Montana. Nope. Open everyday except Christmas.

Local Lodging available. Local Guides available. Shop open daily 8am. The Best in Flies on the Mo. Local Shuttles available daily.
