All is well as we move into the final week of the month. Cooler than July, August lets us coast into Autumn and cooler weather yet.

September has always been known as a kick ass nymph month. The fish like the cooler water temps along with the shorter sun appearances. The water temps continue to cool and the fish continue to respond.

Zirdle and sow are still in fashion. But small mayfly nymph are good behind a Purple Wieght fly or worm or larger Hare’s Ear, or PT jig . Big one, small one is a player this time of year.

The river opens up as well. While th previous month many are fishing the upper reach searching for the coolest water temp and happiest trout, the month ahead allows for rediscovery of the entire Missouri River reach here in central Montana.

Dry fly fishing can have its moments the weeks ahead. Nothing to really plan on but the localized small mayfly and larger mayfly hatches do occur. Be ready to drop the anchor or stalk softly as these moments can be fleeting. First drift type of approach as they are privy to predatory behaviors such as anglers! Localized is the key word here. Stop. Study. Make a plan. Attack with precision.

We love Callebaetis Cripples, Callebaetis Spinners, Adams, Purple Haze, and the like. Drop a tiny mayfly of the bottom if you want to blind fish this rig. Or, just toss the big dry. That is fun too.

Streamer fishing makes it return as the sun is lower in the sky above. Small leeches in the darker color ways are seasonal trout candy.
