Hump Day Fishing Report Montana’s Missouri River
Water temps are currently 35.5F.
Water flows are currently 3970cfs, just shy of 4K. This author believes the flows are lower than the USGS gauge is reading. Current basin percentages are at about 75% YTD.
March has been good in the fishing arena. Better than average? Maybe. The fish have moved into a bit faster water, as well as the deep and slow back end of runs, in the bucket. But, it is time as the water temps creep upwards throughout this month ahead. Are the fish clinging to the banks yet? No man, no man, no they are not. And we would argue that those who cast at the shore all day long should seek help, or a freestone environment.
Nymphers are tossing firebeads and pink flies. Some worms too. One or two spilts if you wish.
Some midge around in the afternoons, and mornings. The wind the past week has kept the fish at bay, the one’s that like to look upwards.
Swingers out there and they are getting them. SOL fished the last couple days and found the fish are ready to eat a few leeches. Tips included the front end of the week include IMOW 5×5, 8-12 feet of T-8, 7.5′-2.5′ I/T-8. Did find a few anglers tossing the Intermediate tips, with lesser success stories.
