Missouri river fishing report late june

Very good dry fly angling out there if you like to run and gun or post up and headhunt. River flows 4400cfs with temps falling this past few days to 57F. Perfect. PMD hatches daily along with a smattering of caddis. More caddis in the canyon but plenty of yellow bugs too. Upper river certainly holds daily PMD emergences. Cooler mornings like the past week get the bugs off later int he day. 11am is the norm, with normal seasonal temps. Later in the afternoon if the air temps are low overnight. Rain and high winds blow and knock the bugs from the trees eliminating morning and mid day spinner falls. Cripples and Spinners are king. Emergers? OK, sure. Duns. No way, not here on this river.

Caddis flies will get it done too. Lots skittering around out there. Blind fishers like to toss the caddis patterns. Large spinners too.

Post up anglers remember about the element of surprise. That never fails. Hail Mary casts to begin the session generally fail.

Nymphers liking the sow bug, Pheasant Tails that look like Frenchie’s, Split Case PMD, Psycho May, CDC PT Jig, S & M Rusty or Brown, Bloom’s Weight Fly Gold, Bloom’s Weight Fly Red Bead Purple, Tungsten Jig SF PMD, Fullback Napoleon Brown, Fullback Napoleon PMD. Go deep if you wish. Some like it short. Split shot probably not needed in these flows.

Sunshine for the week ahead. Back to normal. Cool and wet which we liked this past weekend.

Boat rentals, the Best Flies Under the Big Sky, Open daily 630 am til 7pm, lots of cool hats and stickers and T’s, A fly line mega store including HH own Headhunter Fly Line for Dry Fly Aficionados, line cleaning products, boat nets and walk wade nets, a full selection of Skwala gear, Orvis, SAGE, RIO, Galvan Reels, SA, Loon, Fishpond, Rising Products, sunscreen, killer shoes, ice and so much more daily at the Fun Fly Shop in Craig.

Have a great last week in June!
