Missouri RIver Fishing Report Friday April 10th
Green color is coming!
Weekend fishing report from your friends at Headhunters Fly Shop in downtown Craig MT. April 10th.
Water Flows currently 3200cfs. Water temps approaching 44F.
BWO’s waxing. Midges too. Some larger fly opportunities in the canyon. BWO patterns we like BWO Sparkle Flag, Parachute Adams, CDC Comparadun BWO, Film Critic Cripple, Finch’s Hangman, Transitional Dun, RS2, Captive Dun, Magic Fly BOW nymph, D & D Cripple, Last Chance Cripple, Short Wing Emerger BWO, Quigley’s Half Dun Hatching BWO, Two Bit Hooker, Purple Lightening Bug, Flashover Olive, Frenchie, Pheasant Tail, Glass Bullet Olive.
Lots of rainbow trout on Redds. Let them be. Spawners should be left alone. Future fish depend on it. Lots of fish not on Redds too. Unscrupulous to fish for the spawning fish. Our opinion.
Dirt Snake in the mix. Sow Bug patterns a staple here in Craig. Buy the popular Ninch’s Pill Popper here! The Best Flies under the Big Sky here at Headhunter Fly Shop of Craig.
No runoff to speak of. Water inflows have peaked already. Lowest Canyon Ferry inflows in recorded history. Since envelopment of the Mo River upstream creating the reservoir. Attended the Missouri River Watershed Advisory Committee Meeting yesterday. Report forthcoming. But will give you the upshot of that meeting. 3k cfs all summer. Unless it begins to rain. It has happened recently a few years ago. It happened in 2008. It happened in 1997. It has happened. Bring it.
The entire river is fishing. Dam to Cascade. The streamer bite has been pretty impressive most days out there. Of course, it is always fishing. Some days suck. Meaning the catch rate. Most days fishing are good. Some are great. But generally does not have a direct correlation to enjoyment and fish to the net. When you fish with your friends, your family, or even by yourself…fishing helps the soul.
Swingers all certainly executing the cast with a Scandi Setup. You need Trout Spey help? Come on in. We have experts on site and willing to chat about trout spey techniques, rigging set ups, and flies. Lots and lots of trout spey specific patterns in stock. Soft Hackles too! Wet flies? Yep.
Scott Rods in stock The GT and Centric are awesome. Demo’s available. Come try on out. Or just buy one online. We trust your decision making process.
New SAGE rods in stock and for demo too. The SAGE R8 Power and the mid priced SAGE Arrow for your fishing fun. The Arrow seems to be the staff and angler favorite so far. A great forgiving and totally fun to cast feely rod. The Arrow loves the Headhunters Fly Line. A jewel I would say. A very good line to rod match.
Loving this spring here in central Montana. Not too much winter this year. Would’ve like a ton more snow and rain and winter. Maybe next year?
