Missouri River Fly Fisherman

Missouri River Fly Fishing Report 7.27.13

Fishing is good right now. Or not. It depends on when you get out of bed. Those who get on early and off early will tell you it’s good, maybe even great. Those who linger and eat warm breakfast have other reports.

Most of the Headhunters guide staff is out of the parking lot by 6:15 (if not earlier), and clients are happy upon return around 2pm. Look at the smiles above. A positive fishing report from the Missouri River no doubt.

Trico’s and Caddis are the main hatches if you’re chasing early morning technical risers. Other patterns will work on these fish, including the Buzzball, Purple Haze, Snowshoe Midge, and baetis – er – Pseudo Cripples. Drowned spinners on the tough ones. Play the game and win.

Cooler weather is in the forecast, which should mean that good fishing will extend further into the day. Hopefully cooler water temperatures will result. If so, expect to see a re-charge in the fish and the bugs. Callibaetis? Oh I hope so…
