Missouri River Fishing Report 4.12.24 Headhunters Fly Shop

Weather: Warm. Air temps higher than average int eh mid 70’s for the weekend. Some wind, of course.

Water Temperatures: 42F. Rising quickly.

Water Flows: 3660 cfs. Up and down. No understanding why. Summer flows predicted at 4100cfs.

Dry Fly: Some good midge action. Seems the sun will put out the flame. Covered by clouds, the sun becomes less of an issue. Cluster Midge like Quigley’s, Harrop’s, Stalcup’s, Griffith’s, Adams. Dropper if you wish. Soft hackle? Short? Long? Aimlessly stalled out in a pond?

Streamer: Sink tip? Yes. Super heavy? No. Intermediate? OK. Medium speed waters have been known to hold a few. S0fter insides? Yes. Stripping it like you are in warmer water temps? Nope. Still winter/spring as far as the trout are concerned. Best fly? Flashy Gold or Olive? Headhunters has increased the streamer selections this year. Come by and see what we have added! Headhunters is your streamer fly line source. Plenty of lines with varied sink rates to get the fly to the trout!

Trout Spey: Skagit tips still the right choice. Fish in soft, medium soft, adnd med paced waters. Scratching the bottom? Still. pretty good idea. Tips with less weight are becoming more common. But still the right thing to do. Lots of swingers in the shop and you could join them. Scandi lines on the horizon, but the water temp will have to come up. May brings more ops for soft hacklers. The advent of BWO’s will allow you to get closer to the surface, so maybe soon? A few have been caught on the softie the past week. We have a large and comprehensive selection of Trout Spey lines and tips and accessories. Come in and we can help!

Nymphers: Fishing well on some days. Others? Sun may be an issue? Don’t know. Some inconsistencies in every day. Some days a reach will fish well. Others not as well. It is fishing. Catching is the hard part. The fish do make the ultimate decision. Most are fishing pink. Pill Poppers, Mid Weight Scud, FireBead Ray Charles, Tailwater Sow, Throat Lozenges, Rainbow Czech, Zebra’s and a plethora of worm patterns.
