A normal Tuesday in May. Dearborn River Update too.

A normal Tuesday in May today. Spring like weather with sun, wind and occasional clouds. Guides out, some fish up, more eating nymphs subsurface.

Beyond that? Not too much to report.

Spring Opener on the tributaries including the Dearborn River in a couple weeks. Flows did spike with the 1” of rain in the hills. The Dearborn River Gauge showed a move upwards to 160cfs. Floaters need 350cfs and above. We are seeing about 50%-60% of snowpack YTD on the Eastern Slope. Will that snowpack provide the n needed flows to float the Dearborn River in a couple weeks? Well, maybe. I believe we may need a rain event or heavy and wet snowfalls to get the engine running for this tributary. Just one man speaking here, not a scientist, just simply a fishing guide with a long tenure in this very neighborhood. There are some years when. the flows are not suitable for floating the DB.

Weather for the future is forecasting more sunshine. Air temps for the next week are in the 70’s and 80’s. More rain next Monday. One week away. Forecasts typically change and morph in that time frame.

A few March Browns out there. More today. Mo Day Caddis, some around. This is a fly pattern that can actually sit somewhat on the water. Higher floater than many of our Caddis that represent here on the Mo. The lower half of the river column, towards Cascade, not towards the dam, hold both of these insects in higher populations than the upper. A Translucent Emerger, an X Caddis, Party On Top Caddis, Foamy Finfetcher Caddis, the exclusive All Stages Caddis tied locally, Polyfoam Caddis, of course the CornFed Caddis and more! This fly does move well on the water, the actual fly, the live one, and the fish truly due move to it if presented properly. The March Brown is appropriate in a size 12-14. When you see a few trout snack on them, tie one on and fish it. Love to fish the singles this time of year, although some prefer the double rig twin fly set-up. I have personally gone to one fly again, for 4 or 5 years now. Simply better more consistent drifts. And that, that my fishy fiends, is far more important thna the secret fly pattern.

Drift is king. Does not matter the pattern if the drift sucks. Never, does the fly matter, when the drift is compromised.

Never.

This statement coming from an author who owns a fly shop, and like to sell flies.

Never does a bad drift with a great fly impress trout.

And that is all today on the Headhunters Fishing Report and Blog. Thanks for reading. Appreciate your comments below as always. Stop in and say hello when in Craig. Best Flies Under the Big Sky at House of Headhunters on the Eastside baby! Always open first, open last.

Tuesday today. Tomorrow, half way to the weekend!
