Hump Day Fishing Report

Hump Day Fishing Report

Not too bad out there Wednesday. Much better than the disappointing bite on endured by many onTuesday.

John said it best when he said it seems like an every other day bite.

After today, I think he’s right.

It does not bode well for Thursday though. If that is indeed the pattern we have here in Craig late April 2020.

Fished the mixed bag with long time guests from Ennis today. High temps today in the low 80’s with overcast hazy skies this afternoon. Tons of midge out all day long. Did not matter much to the trout as we did not see any movement on the ubiquitous midge fishing today on the Mighty Mo.

BWO’s came off int eh afternoon, with a couple, and I mean really a couple becoming interested in the baetis passing overhead.

Got one on an attractor pattern on the surface. Got one on a white streamer pulled from the bank. Did well on nymphs in the morning. Scuds and sows. Not one on a BWO subsurface patterns. So stuck pretty close to the scud sow equation.

Medium slow to medium speed waters 4′-6′ deep with a B split shot. That was the nymphing game.

Then the water came up 500 cfs. 500 cfs today, 500 cfs yesterday.  Pushed those fish off the bite for a bit. But many anglers finished strong today as success was had by many.

Anglers spread throughout the river with the Dearborn not spitting enough mud to spook boaters and banks from the canyon section. Some traffic from Prewitt and all the way to Cascade as the BWO’s on the lower river can really be terrific in the spring. Some years, some days…

Saw a couple anglers swinging through a run or two today as well. Stop in for any Trout Spey Knowledge you need, products, rods, lines, tips, guide trips or casting lessons. Headhunters is your Trout Spey Source in the Northwest and Rocky Mountain States.

Looking froward to a good May ahead. March Browns, Mothers Day Caddis, BWO’s, Midges, and late int eh month PMD’s. May can be a great one. Here’s hoping to a strong May fishing here in central Montana.
