Thursday October 10th Headhunters Fly Shop Fishing Report

Lots happening locally as we kick off our Trout Spey Camp 2019 this morning with a cast of thousands here in downtown Craig Montana.

Spey casters from around the country and beyond have gathered here at Headhunters for this educational, informational, product showcase with reps and all of the trout spey gear you can dream of! Thanks to the reps, our staff and beyond for making this happen!

#troutspeycamp on your Instagram for all of the updates and photos!

A great BWo, the 18’s, today and a good Pseudo hatch as well. Some fish on them and the fish up later in the days s the sun was creeping lower was impressive. A few caught on top, but more on the short leash with Two Bits, LGM’s, Lightening Bugs and the like.

Swingers out there swinging. Larger soft hackles are the key right now. For some. Others getting a few on the streamer side. Thin Mints, smaller leeches, and slender swingers can get some action. The sun does not help.

A busy weekend here at Headhunters, but beyond this weekend the river will certainly be quieter. Look for fewer anglers shortly! Book. your fall October or November trip today as Headhunters does not close, shut down, or lay off staff. We are here all 12 months fishing the Mo!

Again, lots happening at our Trout Spey Camp. Great food by Kelli Wilson of Mo River Eats, who also provides our daily lunches. A 101 Trout Spey Course taught by John  and Whitney and a cast of HH instructors. A great Sustained Anchor Class by Mike McCune attended by 40. Friday brings us Whitney Gould teaching a Touch and Go Course with Mike again doing his Sustained class Friday. Saturday brings a Q & A clinic in the morning with eating competitions and more fun. The entire gang is fishing in the afternoons with many guided though Headhunters of Craig. We have a bundle of Trout Spey guides for your winter pleasures as well!

Come by the shop this weekend to check out the industry reps showing their Trout Spey selections with the likes of SIMMS, Sage, RIO, Loomis, Orvis, Scientific Anglers, ECHO, Nautilus, Douglas, and more. We have it all this weekend in Craig.

Izaak’s open through the 19th of October with a normal schedule of 4-9 Wednesday thru Sunday. Come get some ribs this weekend!

Water levels in the 4K range. Temps in the lower 50’s. Weeds? Yep. It’s the Mo. No matter how you try, you cannot rid ourselves of them. No weeds, no bugs, no fish.

The weeds make the river a 12 month resource with scuds, sows, a varied and deep insect population. We would not have it any other way.

All good here in our neighborhood. Fishing is as good as you are. We love the fall.

The hard core streamer guys are not getting many. It can be difficult to bring hem to the fly in the high bright sun. The short leashes getting a decent number of takes. The dry dropper dudes producing well. The swingers? In heaven this weekend with a bunch of like minded anglers in downtown Craig!

See you 7-7 daily at the epic-center of fly fishing at House of Headhunters!
